R&P: Let's hear it for the unsung heroes of our favourite film soundtracks ~ the *score* composers…?
Good morning R&P :)
{It’s 8am here ~ Wolfie has been on an all-nighter again, relaxing with good music}

So, people here often ask about our favourite film soundtracks, but I want to hear about *scores*. We all know about Ennio Morricone, but aside from him, not many films with song soundtracks also have seperate scores mentioned.

Anyway, I want you to tell me who your favourite score composers are, and for which films.

Mine :

Anne Dudley ~ "Buster" : ‘The Robbery’

Anne Dudley ~ "Buster" : ‘Thoughts of Home’ / ‘And I Love Her’ / ‘Will You Still Be Waiting?’

Graeme Revell ~ "The Crow" : ‘Devil’s Night’

Graeme Revell ~ "The Craft" : ‘Bells, Books and Candles’
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0oq_qWWj 2o&fmt=18

BQ : What films can you name that had both a soundtrack CD and a score CD?
{I know that both "The Crow" and "The Craft" did}

BQ2 : What are your favourite soundtrack albums?
I knew I forgot someone!

Carter Burwell ~ "Rob Roy" : ‘Troops in the Mist’

"Rob Roy" : ‘Rannoch Moor Suite’

Beautiful selections everyone :)

Some names I know, and some I don’t, but I am very happy to see Vangelis get a mention {my mum has the original "Chariots of Fire" LP}.
This is a very hard choice…

I know it’s ridiculous but some of my favorites are from movies that absolutely fascinated me as a child, I haven’t really payed much attention to newer movies but for a few…here’s a couple:

John Williams - Jurassic Park - "End Credits"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWIdO9Did qU

John Williams - Harry Potter 1 - "Hedwig’s Theme"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5KLgRtfm rA
(Don’t judge, I was ten years old when this movie came out - it enthralled me! :) )

Randy Edelman - Anaconda - "Anaconda" & "Watching and Waiting"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt7RrrDAE fw
I just love when those flutes start up….

Hans Zimmer - The Da Vinci Code - "Chevaliers de Sangreal"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5FyRZbqf eM
It was a toss-up between this and Pirates of the Caribbean, but while the POTC score always makes me smile, this one is more serious and dramatic.

I realize my list is getting a bit long but I just wanted to throw in the soundtrack Epica did for a Dutch movie.
"The Alleged Paradigm" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6r649X5-r dY

Ooh, I really like that 3rd link you posted! Thanks! I ought to check that one out, it’s been forever since I’ve seen that movie too….

BA: Hmmm I have a 2 disc set from Donnie Darko…the first is the soundtrack and the second contains the scores.

BA2: Sweeney Todd, and I’m a sucker for old Disney soundtracks (The Lion King, Tarzan, Aladdin, Cinderella, Snow White…). A more recent one would be the newest Underworld soundtrack particularly the song by Perry Farrell - "Nasty Little Perv (Renholder Remix)".

Great question!

That’s two questions in one week! Whoa! haha

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Howard Shore
The Godfather - Nino Rota
The Pink Panther - Henry Mancini
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - John Williams

BA: No idea. Sorry.

BA2: Dazed and confused
Last action hero
The Crow

When I think of a Score Composer, the first person that comes to Mind is John Williams… The man has created Scores for some of Hollywood’s Greatest Movies and he doesn’t seem to be quitting any time soon… I’ve Loved his work for a long time…

My personal favorite however is Hans Zimmer.. His work on the Soundtrack for the Da Vinci Code is one of the most beautiful pieces of Music I have ever had the honor of Listening to…

Oh, and Honorable Mention to Vangelis, who made the Movie Chariots of Fire a Cult Classic with his Mind Altering Soundtrack…

I don’t know many and your first answer named my favorite two especially John Williams. He was amazing in some of the films he scored. Sorry movies just aren’t really in my field of expertise but I always try to answer your questions because I always learn something from them.

Didn’t Carter Burwell get his start with The Coen Brothers on "Blood Simple" and has scored all of their films?

Graeme Revell also does some really nice "incidental" music on the Rock soundtrack for "S.F.W."

…and Hal Hartley both Directs & Scores his films — mostly independant, but totally quirky ( see "Henry Fool" )

So many great soundtracks have "catchy" themes & Grandiose orchestrations.

I am more attracted to compositions that have a quirky, odd nature about them — sometimes a "spaciness"… sometimes iwth "tinkley" percussion.

I like those composers who can combine this "quirkiness" with music where things seem "odd"… a subtle soundtrack that denotes that…. something is not quite "right" :)

It’s so interesting to hear these people and see the similarities in style, appear in all of this movies!!

Other than that… my faves –

David Byrne — The Last Emperor (1987)

Mark Knopfler ( Dire Straits ) — Local Hero (1983) // The Princess Bride (1987)

Vangelis — Chariots of Fire (1981) // Bladerunner (1982) // Year of Living Dangerously (w/ Maurice Jarre, 1983)

Maurice Jarre ( Father of Jean-Michel Jarre ) — Ryan’s Daughter (1970) // The Year of Living Dangerously (1983) // A Passage to India (1984) // Witness (1985) // The Mosquito Coast (1986) // Dead Poets Society (1989) // Ghost (1990) // Fearless (1993)

Rachel Portman — Life Is Sweet (1991) // Where Angels Fear to Tread (1991) // Benny & Joon (1993) // The Joy Luck Club (1993) // Sirens (1993) // The Road to Wellville (1994) // Emma (1996) // The Cider House Rules (1999) // Chocolat (2000)

Edit –

…and Carter Burwell :)

Blood Simple (1984) // Raising Arizona (1987) // Miller’s Crossing (1990) // Barton Fink (1991) // Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) // Kalifornia (1993) // The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) // Rob Roy (1995) // Fargo (1996) // Conspiracy Theory (1997) // The Big Lebowski (1998) // Gods and Monsters (1998) // Mystery, Alaska (1999) // Three Kings (1999) // Being John Malkovich (1999) // Before Night Falls (2000) // Hamlet (2000) // A Knight’s Tale (2001) // The Man Who Wasn’t There (2002) // Adaptation. I love the Virgin Suicides score album by Air (at least past the first track which was I think just an attempted single to slap on the front end). It also had a soundtrack which if memory serves me correctly featured some pretty good tunes.

The album was split, but I also like Mark Mothersbaugh’s score work for the Royal Tanenbaums was really good. The songs were great too.

Goblin’s score for Suspiria was very good as well.
